ABOUT

St Demetrios Greek Language School is a community language school operated by the Greek Orthodox Parish and Community of St Demetrios, St Marys under the auspices of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. The school is administered by the Administrative Committee of the Greek Orthodox Parish and Community of St Demetrios and the Rector of the above-mentioned church organisation. The Greek language school was established in 1970 together with the Greek Orthodox Church of St Demetrios to which it belongs.
The purpose of the school is to teach the Modern Greek Language, the Orthodox Faith, Greek culture, traditions and the history of Greece and Cyprus. This is primarily for the children of the parish but is open to anyone in the community who wishes to enrol their children at the school.

The material taught reinforces the ethnic, linguistic and religious identity of Greece with the support of trained professionals and the Church leaders. The study of Modern Greek will allow the students to read, write, communicate, reflect on and understand the nature and role of language and culture in their own lives and the lives of others
Currently the school employs 3 teachers with around 30 students attending from suburbs within the Penrith Council area and beyond. The school is located at 47 Hobart St St Marys NSW 2760 on the first floor of the St Marys Greek Community Hall and is comprised of three purpose-built classrooms. In classroom one, teaching is undertaken using technology including a digital screen for online material that complements the assigned text. Classrooms 2 and 3 are allocated as the offline teaching rooms using prescribed texts and other materials provided by the teacher in conjunction with the NSW Modern Greek Syllabus.
